Background
Dr. Pete Teel, Entomologist from Texas A&M University, will make a presentation that will examine the application of technologies to obtain and integrate research data necessary to study the important interactions of tick, cattle, and landscape.
The technologies of remote sensing, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have been utilized to obtain and integrate information on cattle movement with spatial heterogeniety of rangeland vegetation communities, spatial distribution of free-living tick populations, and the number of parasites acquired by the moving host. Ticks are obligate bloodfeeding ectoparasites of vertebrates that spend only about 2% of their life span feeding on hosts to complete the life cycle. The remaining 98% of the life span is spent in vegetation communities where they have fallen upon completion of feeding. The resulting distribution of ticks and the risk of becoming reinfested is correlated to the host animal use of the landscape. While the traditional method of protecting cattle from economic losses and the threat of disease transmission is with acaricide applications to animals, other methodologies, including brush control techniques can suppress tick populations in the off-host environments. One of the limitations to the development of effective IPM strategies against ticks is understanding how tick populations respond to the interactions of grazing cattle and the disturbances of heterogenous landscapes.

Joe Coffey, CARET representative and Rodney Foil, Administrative Heads Section representative, will provide an update of activities of the Title VIII Coordinating Committee. This is an ad hoc committee established by NASULGC’s Board on Agriculture to coordinate an effort to develop positions consistent with the various components of the land-grant university system.

Two additional items were presented for information:
- Convenient times for future meetings were discussed. The 1998 Southern Region Mini Land Grant meeting has been scheduled for August 1-4 in Athens, Georgia.
- Dick Ridgeway of the Riley Memorial Foundation distributed information concerning a joint CSREES/NCRS Regional Workshop on October 9-10 in Atlanta. Directors are asked to submit nominations for exemplary collaborative programs. Programs to be used in the workshops will be chosen in late July or early August.
Meeting adjourned.
